No mention of “Wrath of the Dragon God?” Of all the “mainstream” D&D movies, that’s the most D&D. There’s a clear wizard, a cleric of Obad-Hai, a paladin, and so on. There’s a magmin! There’s a party of four, including a barbarian/ rogue. It looked like four people playing a couple of sessions, and it wasn’t as bad as the 2000 movie, but it just wasn’t interesting. I think a D&D movie only works if it’s not just a fantasy movie: it’s got to be a heist, or something. In fact, a D&D movie that was set up like a heist movie, a la “Ocean’s 11” or “Ant Man” would be excellent. I’d prefer that to another horror-influenced take on it (“Knights of Badassdom” has already tread that ground, and should be a cautionary tale).
I don’t think that’s what we’ll get. I think we’ll get a bog-standard, middling fantasy movie with a bunch of names patched on. If David Leslie Johnson had ever written a good movie, I’d be more hopeful.
As for directors, Whedon is out (Marvel soured him on other peoples’ properties for a while), but I’d want someone who could handle a larger cast. Bryan Singer has a spotty track record, but “Usual Suspects” was awesome. I’d go for Guy Ritchie, though: “Snatch” and “Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels” show that he can balance the cast and he’s been working on licensed properties lately.

Hahahaha. If Wrath of the Dragon God is the best we have then we are truly in trouble (and you’re right, it IS the best so far).
I’d love to see a heist D&D movie. I think they could go horror. There’s plenty of great scary movies out there and plenty of bad ones too.
Nice choices for directors. I’m excited to see who we get!
